
He studied at Sekolah Kebangsaan Batu 7, Tanjung Karang up to Standard Six (1965β1970), Seri Desa Religious Secondary School (1971β1973), Maahad Muhammadi Kota Bharu (1974β1977) and the Nilam Puri Higher Learning Institute, Kelantan (1978β1980).
He earned a Bachelor of Islamic Studies (Hons) in Usuluddin at the University of Malaya (1980β1984), a Masterβs degree in Daβwah (1995β1997), and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Shariah and Islamic Management at the University of Malaya (2001β2004).
He began as an Islamic Affairs Officer (Grade S41) at the Islamic Research Centre, Prime Ministerβs Department (1984β1989), then as Coordinating Officer for the Melaka Mosque and Surau Takmir programme (1990). He served as Assistant Mufti at the Federal Territory Muftiβs Office (Labuan Branch) (2005β2007) and at the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) (2007β2009).
He was appointed Deputy Mufti of Melaka on 19 September 2011, carried out the Muftiβs duties from 23 September 2014, and was officially installed as the fifth Mufti of Melaka on 15 October 2014. He took optional retirement on 1 May 2016. He was also a member of the Melaka Islamic Religious Council and Chairman of the Melaka Fatwa Committee (2014β2016).
He conducted research on the administration of Islamic affairs and served as a facilitator for JAKIM module workshops. He sat on the Rukyah (crescent-sighting) Committee, the Halal Panel, the Mosque and Surau Management Panel and the Sermon Text Panel of Melaka, and chaired the Melaka Fatwa Committee meetings. He was active in writing through DBP and departmental magazines, the Berita Harian newspaper, and USIMβs Journal of Fatwa Management and Research.
He received JAKIM Excellent Service Awards (2004, 2007, 2010) and a Certificate of Appreciation from the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (2009). He was conferred the Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah honour by the Selangor State Government (2009), and the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka (DMSM), carrying the title Datuk, by the Melaka State Government in 2014.
